Built between the 16th and 17th centuries, the Church of Saints Marcello and Lucia stands on the site of a pre-existing castle chapel dedicated to Saint Lucia.
The Church of Saints Marcello and Lucia, built between the 16th and 17th centuries in Vinacciano, stands on the site of a pre-existing castle chapel dedicated to Saint Lucia, which was expanded when it became a baptistery.
The reorganization of the settlement and the functional needs related to the residence of the clergy led, in 1576, to the construction of a portico on the southern side of the church. The portico’s walls host tombstones and memorial plaques, a tradition commonly found in rural churches.
The interior of the church features a single nave. The altars, dating back to 1710, are made of sandstone. On the side walls, there are six 18th-century paintings, each depicting a pair of saints.
The main altar stands out for its original stucco crown, which encloses an oval containing an oil painting of the Virgin kneeling while receiving a crown from Christ. This work, dating to the mid-18th century, is attributed to an anonymous painter from Pistoia.
Beneath the main altar is an 18th-century painting depicting Saint Lucia with Saints Anthony the Abbot and Luigi Gonzaga, created by the Pistoian artist Pietro Marchesini, known as L’Ortolanino.
