Formerly known as Castellina Malazzani, the village has ancient origins closely tied to its strategic location near the Serravalle pass.
Located in a border area between the middle Arno valley and the Valdinievole, the fortified settlement of Castellina was likely part of a military defensive line created by the Byzantines in the 6th century to counter the Lombard advance towards the Pistoia area.
This system featured a network of fortifications arranged along the ridge to maintain visual communication.
Archival records confirm that by 1382, the village was already enclosed by walls and equipped with a fortress.
Today, Castellina extends at the foot of the Romanesque Church of Saints Philip and James, with its steep streets and narrow alleys preserving an authentic medieval atmosphere.
