From Gabella Vecchia, an ancient customs post at the foot of the castle, one can admire the bottaccio of the oil mill, a body of water that once powered the mills.

Gabella Vecchia was the site of the ancient customs post, located at the foot of the castle, where some old houses still preserve ancient inscriptions.

From the village, one can enjoy a view of the bottaccio of the oil mill, a picturesque body of water that once powered the hydraulic wheels of mills and presses. The inhabitants had the right to draw water without restrictions, provided it was not being used by the miller.

The withdrawal of water channelled to the millstones for their operation was prohibited during the working week but was allowed from vespers on Saturday until the ninth hour of the following Monday, with the miller’s permission. Additionally, throughout Monday, and without restrictions, it was permitted to use the water from La Maggiore, likely the main canal of Serravalle, for irrigation.

From the city walls of Serravalle, the Porta della Gabella opens, leading to the ancient customs post.
